Meet the artist
Ama Liyanage is a contemporary artist based in Ontario, Canada. Drawing on cherished memories of her childhood in Sri Lanka and the subtle beauty of everyday life, her work explores themes of stillness, memory, and identity.
She embarked on an exploration of rediscovering creativity in adulthood and the transformative journey of embracing art as a vocation. This journey began with a reflection on the power of relaxation, a departure from the years spent wrestling with the notion of self-worth tethered solely to productivity.

Her style is ever-evolving and multifaceted, embracing experimentation and allowing diverse techniques to coexist harmoniously. Influenced by French and Dutch Impressionist portrayals of leisure, she reimagines these traditions to center women of colour in scenes of rest and reflection - challenging historical narratives that often link their identities to labor. Through her work, Ama offers tender, contemplative representations that celebrate identity, leisure, and introspection.
Ama’s work have been acquired by collectors across Canada and the United States. She has exhibited at various juried shows including The Artist Project, The One of a Kind Show, and is currently represented by Artspace Warehouse in Los Angeles.
